L'’anguillulose ou strongyloïdose est due à la présence dans l'’intestin d’'un ver rond du genre Strongyloides dont l’'espèce dominante chez l'’homme, S. stercoralis est unique parmi les géohelminthes pour ses capacités de maintien par deux cycles reproductifs différents : un cycle externe et un cycle interne d'’auto-réinfestation à l'’intérieur du tractus gastro-intestinal responsable d'’une pérennité des souches et d'’une très longue durée d'’infestation de l’'hôte.
