Jusquà un passé très récent, le genre Scedosporium ne comprenait que deux espèces : Scedosporium apiospermum et Scedosporium prolificans. Ces champignons filamenteux connus depuis fort longtemps ont suscité ces dernières années un regain dintérêt lié à la multiplication des situations dimmunodépression, et notamment au développement des greffes de moelle osseuse et des transplantations dorganes (en particulier pulmonaires ou coeur-poumons), ainsi quà leur reconnaissance comme agents de colonisation des voies respiratoires chez les patients atteints de mucoviscidose ou de granulomatose familiale chronique.
