Résumé

Women’s presence in terrorism is not a new phenomenon. The earliest records of their involvement in terrorist movements date to the late eighteen hundreds. Throughout history, women’s participation in conflicts has been limited to supporting roles, giving birth to and raising children as future fighters. However, with time, their position and contribution in terrorist attacks have expanded to an important role of suicide bombers. This trend has been influenced by economical, regional, social, religious and personal factors. Further, caused by force and oppression from terrorist organizations, which understood the effectiveness of women suicide bombers and have increased their recruitment for strategic reasons. Women through decades have provoked changes in the meaning and view on terrorism. As perpetrators of violent attacks they have changed the general perception of women’s role in a society and the myth about their weakness and submissiveness. The paper provides contextual insights towards understanding why women become terrorists and valuable members of terrorist groups.
